This Australian bullwhip design has been a dream and work of 15 years for me to perfect.  I've experimented on many whips over the years, slowly perfecting this design until finally achieving my goal.  This is my favorite bullwhip to make and to use and it's the one I carry most often.

These Australian bullwhips are top of the line, finely plaited, 8' in length.  They are offered in 20 plait and 16 plait and 24 plait, all with 8 plait points.  The fall is a fine 3' white hide (optional dyed black).  The whip as a whole is light and agile, weighing only 15oz, with a very dense and responsive thong.  It is balanced for fast multiple cracking, yet with an impressive report which sometimes rivals that of heavier whips, and with a foundation that expresses aesthetic sensibility and the atheletic nature of the whip.  These are the most challenging, most detailed, and finest whips I make.  They are designed for those who want the absolute best performance and beauty in a bullwhip.

The Ingredients In More Detail

A well proportioned and balanced, ergonomic handle. The handle length is 13 1/4" with a 15/16" grip. This size handle allows for a balance between a dense "weighty" thong, and wonderful grip and control, without excessive wrist tiring during heavy use.  The stiffness of the spring transition extends the useable leverage of the handle a few inches more, giving the whip an action similar to a stockwhip, but a little smoother and heavier.  The half tapered handle allows the hand grip to be sizeable enough to be comfortable, while the excess weight is eliminated from the top of the handle and thong.

The plaiting on the handle is designed to interact attractively with the handle taper, and the keeper knot is distinct and economical.  The knob is shaped and sized compactly and ergonomically for hard wrist action.  The wrist strap is 5 strands, 6.5", and handy on a whip like this, but not necessary if not desired.  This half tapered handle design was first created by the great 3rd generation whipmaker Cecil Henderson, of T. Henderson and Sons.

The length and weight of the thong are selected for cracking routines designed to be done in an open place, where the nice flowing action of the longer thong can show it's grace and speed. The whip length I've selected is 8', my favorite on the Australian bullwhip.  With the fine 36" white hide fall, the grace, length and speed of the thong is the perfect blend, providing an 11.5' whip length total, cracker included.  The whip feels like it has some length and grace, and yet it unrolls with certain authority.  It's able to move from point to point, instantly on command.  The speed of these whips is impressive and they offer the most responsive and lively thongs I've ever plaited.  These bullwhips are carefully measured from graphs every 3" down the thong while being plaited.  This graph was drawn up as the result of years of research.  As a result of the graphs, the weight and taper is nearly identical on every whip I make, and they match what I feel to be the ideal.

The ultra dense, double bellied thong is finely plaited and lead loaded throughout its entire length using a technique which I've invented and developed myself.  This technique is entirely different to what is traditionally known as "loading".  Traditional loading tends to disrupt the fall of the whip, make it heavy, and weigh it down so that it falls incorrectly, albeit more heavily.  My technique uses less than 1 oz. of lead, distributed in a smooth taper down the entire length of the thong, all the way to the point.  An equal amount of weight is taken out of the thong in leather, so that the thong's weight is not increased, but it's density, inertia, and aerodynamics are enhanced by the lead.  The result is a fast smooth, naturally falling bullwhip, with increased speed and power, balanced for fast multiple cracking, but with a louder report than an unloaded whip of the same weight.  The whip handles with ease and speed, and everywhere you point it, it rolls out responsively and promptly to produce a loud report.

Fine plaiting offers a more balanced, flexible and dense thong than the courser plait counts, but it can be overdone to where durability is compromise.  I personally don't like "wall hangers" or whips plaited so finely that durability is sacrificed in the process.  In regards to these thongs, my aim was to produce a finely plaited thong without decreasing the durability inherent with overly fine cut or split leather.  The 20 plait design allows for fancy plaiting and the tightest, smoothest overlay possible, and yet with the full thickness leather and an 8 plait point, the durability of the thong is uncompromised.  It is unnecessary to split the leather (except to even it out a little), and so 16 to 24 plait is a premium plait count on whips of this size and weight.  16 plait is a nice option if someone prefers courser work and wants to save some money, but it offers less options with fancy plaiting on the handle, and lacks the fine look and smoothness of the 20 or 24 plait.  20 plait is the standard pattern and provides a great compromise between fine dense plaiting and durability.  24 plait is also available for someone who wants finer plaiting on the handle and the heavy part of the thong, without decreasing the minimum width of the strands in the 8 plait point.  I don't offer above 24 plait since the points would be required to be more than 8 plait.  24 plait and sometimes 20 plait are subject to hide availibility.

I also am using a tapering spring transition in the transition zone of the thong coming off the end of the foundation.  It effectively eliminates breakdown in that area, and on Australian bullwhips, which are constantly stressed in their transition zones when doing volleys and most of the work they are designed to do.  It is essential to have the added durability in this area.   The tapering spring transition is the solution to transition zone breakdown.  They have proven themselves over years of use.

These whips have two densely plaited kangaroo bellies.  The first belly is 4 plait and the second is 12 plait. The whips are kangaroo leather all the way through, including the core and bolster.  The white hide fall is finished off with a poly cracker, which produces good volume cracks, wears pretty well, and most importantly, resist tangling.  The foundation is lathe turned poplar.

For those who are looking for the most atheletic all around bullwhip they can buy, in fine plait, for performing, target cutting or all around use, these bullwhips are a superb choice.

Each whip is made to order as a custom piece.  Standard length is 8' but 7.5' and 8.5' are also available as variations.  Other lengths may be available in the future as I find time to research and make prototypes for them, perfecting each one.  I offer only the most finely balanced whips in this class and I have not yet researched all lengths.
